Sometimes, Foreign White Border and 4th Edition cards are hard to tell apart. This is a guide how to identify these by a few features.
Revised Edition (a. k. a. 3rd Edition) was also released in Italian, French and German. All had a black-bordered and a white-bordered print run. In German and Italian cards, the last ones as well as the printings of 4th Edition both show similar frames and the copyright date 1995. French cards are more distinct: The copyright date on almost all FWB cards is 1994. The other ones, which have 1995 like 4th Edition, can be identified with the information given in I.2. and I.3—with one exception (see section II.).
I. Information
1. Set Names
Current names for the foreign versions of Revised Edition with white borders are:
German Unlimited/German Revised/3rd Edition White-Bordered (original: Unlimitierte Auflage)
Italian Unlimited/Italian Revised/3rd Edition White-Bordered/Italian Second Edition (original: Seconda Edizione)
French Unlimited/French Revised/3rd Edition White-Bordered (original: Tirage Non Limité)
Everything with the Revised list is referred to as FWB.
2. Easy to identify Cards
These cards are identifiable with minimal knowledge, that is:
— The list of Revised and 4th Edition. Only 246 cards (256 with land
art counted) were included in both sets.
— FWB uses a slash above lowercase i and j in the card titles, 4th Edition uses a round dot;
in 4th Edition cards, the dots of ä, ö and ü in the card titles are shifted to the left:
Exceptions:
There are three known FWB cards with a round i dot: Italian Channel, Lure and Titania’s Song. Italian FWB had two print runs and some cards were changed in between:
It has been reported that round i dot versions were opened from starter decks and the others from booster packs, however, that doesn’t rule out that these specific products were from print runs made at different times.
Other features specific to Italian cards:
In Italian FWB, several cards show the redesigned mana symbols and/or have a bold white copyright line and partially or totally rightward shifted text (see picture above). Italian 4th cards have round i dots and the old (white and black second version) mana symbols. All green Italian FWB cards with bold copyright text exist with the darker and brighter text box.
Mana symbol versions compared (left old, right redesigned):
(Features NOT to rely on:
— The letters g, p, y touching vs. not touching the black line underneath. Sometimes both are touching as the names aren’t aligned the same on all cards.
— The coloration. It can vary depending on print runs and storage conditions.)
3. Hard to identify Cards
These are cards without i, j, ä, ö, ü in their titles.
The feature that applies to all cards is the difference in the alignment of typescript and mana symbols. In FWB cards, they are lower aligned than in 4th cards. It’s only possible to determine the set if both versions of the same card are compared. That’s because the alignment is not the same on all cards within the same set.
On the other hand, many cards differ in wording, line breaking, etc. The following list describes one distinctive deviation in each respective card pair, cards that are identical except for alignment are pictured (FWB on the left, 4th Edition on the right). Additional scans of cards with text differences can be found here.
Note:
German and French 4th Edition cards exist with and without a black dot on the back, FWB cards always have it. Hence, all German and French © 1995 white bordered cards without dot are 4th Edition for sure. (Cards with the black dot can be either.)
German FWB has front cut print variants, 4th Edition does not. Hence, all German © 1995 white bordered front cut cards FWB for sure.
Italian FWB cards exist with and without (three cards reported so far: Red Elemental Blast and two Plains) a black dot on the back, 4th Edition cards never have it. Hence, all Italian © 1995 white bordered cards with dot are FWB for sure. (Cards without the black dot can be either, but are most likely 4th Edition.)
II. List of hard to identify Cards
If information surfaces which seems to contradict the list, some of 41 cards (51 with land art counted) from the Introductory Two-Player Set (© 1996) might be involved. If you still doubt any statement, drop a message. Scans of unidentified cards are welcome, they are collected until both versions have been submitted, then the list will be amended.
